I started my career in Havana, Cuba where I obtained a doctorate degree in medicine in 2007. That same year, I relocated to the US where I continued my studies and earned a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio in 2017 and dual certification as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner in 2023. Being raised in a family of doctors and nurses, loving science and caring for people encourages me to follow this pathway.

In our role as a Mental Health Provider, we are committed to providing quality mental health care to individuals with mental illness. This includes diagnostic evaluations, medication management, and a variety of integrative interventions and genetic testing.

When an individual is exposed to trauma or any significant life events, it is not uncommon for their lives to unravel. Welcome to Florida Neuropsychiatric Institute. I have been practicing psychiatry in Fort Lauderdale for over 25 years. I have a passion working with children, adolescents, adults and seniors who are struggling with issues related to mental health and/or addiction. As the founder of Florida Neuropsychiatric Institute, not only do I provide general psychiatric care, but I am also one of the few trained neuropsychiatrists in the United States. I am double board-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. I believe in using both medication when indicated as well as therapy. I was trained in CBT and was given the Excellence in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy during my residency program. I use supportive therapy with each client I see. I'm Josefina Dort, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with 14 years of nursing experience. I offer virtual visits and treat various mental health disorders such as ADHD, depression, anxiety, trauma-related disorders, nightmares, insomnia, depression, eating disorders using a variety of effective treatments that include medications and psychotherapy.

It is my belief that true peace and healing can only occur with a full understanding of the individual and how they relate to the world around them. Therefore, medication is only a small piece of the puzzle and although there is much talk about the use of evidence based treatments, the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence and so I try to incorporate different schools of thought from not only Western Medicine, but Eastern Medicine as well. In the final analysis we are on this journey together and I find it a privilege to be able to join you.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. I specialize in medical treatment and psychotherapy for depression, anxiety, anger issues, self-esteem issues, challenges with emotional intimacy, problems coping with stress, and obsessions. These symptoms often present themselves when individuals describe feeling "stuck" in their lives. They may have difficulties avoiding repetitive and unhealthy patterns that cause emotional turmoil and distress. I have found it is most therapeutic and cost-effective to provide psychotherapy combined with medication management (when appropriate).

I completed my Associates in Applied Science Nursing From Brookdale Community College, Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Aspen University, and Masters of Science in Nursing at Walden University. I have worked the last 4 years in the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program at Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, NY.
