Samuel T. Goldberg, M.D., is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is on the faculties of the Baltimore-Washington Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, and the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, where he has three times been named Teacher of the Year. Dr Goldberg was also honored with the Wendell Muncie Award by the Maryland Psychiatric Society. His recent writings have concerned psychoanalytic perspectives on the works of William Shakespeare. He currently consults to a community mental health center and has a private practice of psychiatry and psychoanalysis in Columbia, Maryland.
Many (but not all) people need psychiatric medications to help them with depression, mood-swings, anxiety, attentional problems, or obsessions. Psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis work through an individual gaining increased self-understanding, achieved in the context of a uniquely beneficial relationship with the therapist, based on a foundation of privacy, safety and trust.
