I am a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in Chapel Hill with 25 years experience helping people to heal and transform emotional distress by talking freely and deeply about their lives.
As a physician, I understand when medications
may be needed to heal physiologic emotional distress.
But I also know that a person who is listened and responded to with deep understanding will become clearer, stronger and freer to grow -- within themselves, in their relationships and in their work.
This unique, personal therapeutic experience often leads to the most complete and lasting cure, and success in life.
I see adult men and women who seek help with emotional distress including depression, anxiety, grief, self-esteem vulnerability, difficulty in relationships, parenting or work.
Education: Yale College (BA, 1969); Univ of Vermont (MD, 1977); Duke Univ (Adult and Child Psychiatry, 1978-82); Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas (2012).
I teach and supervise contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy in the Duke Department of Psychiatry, and the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas. I am immediate past president of the North Carolina Psychoanalytic Society, and have written about love between fathers and sons.
