I have expertise in anxiety, OCD, ADHD, mood disorders (depression and bipolar disorder), psychotic disorders, women's mental health (including pregnancy), and more.
I have openings for medication management, but unfortunately a waitlist for therapy at this time. I am in-network with some Aetna, Cigna, and United Healthcare plans. I am also happy to provide a superbill that can be submitted to insurance for any out-of-network benefits. Email preferred. Hi, I'm Melissa (aka Dr. Shepard)! Since deciding to pursue psychiatry, I've made it my mission to end mental health stigma and make mental health treatment less scary.

I am a psychiatrist who works primarily by psychotherapy, listening carefully to understand your experience. Feeling understood and accepted can be liberating, which helps us as we work together to understand problems in daily life, such as work, relationships, or school. Our exploration might include talking about your thoughts, feelings, dreams, fears, and fantasies. This process opens up more happiness, well-being, and freedom to make the choices you want.

Mental illness or a psychiatric diagnosis can often feel disparaging, stigmatized, or outdated-this language and terminology often strays people away from seeking the help they need. Mental health, on the other hand, encompasses mind, body, spirit, and brain health. My role in your care can be to prescribe medications, tailor your current medication regimen, or help you find alternatives to pharmaceuticals. I can help make recommendations regarding lifestyle, sleep-hygiene, nutrition, supplements, or daily movement to promote a healthy mind.

I am a general psychiatrist serving adults of all ages. My job is to help you recover and thrive. I use a gentle, supportive style informed by the latest scientific evidence to guide you toward health. In my medical training, I was taught the art of whole person care. I learned that a patient's needs often go beyond the healing of the body. Being the whole person that you are, you come with psychological, emotional, intellectual, cultural, relational, and spiritual faculties that are equally affected by your illness. Together, we will integrate important aspects of who you are into the assessment and treatment of your concerns.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Psychiatrists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
