I maintain openings within a week. See openings and book an online appointment at AnnArborPsych.com. FOCUS: ADHD, Anxiety, Mood, PTSD. While I employ research based diagnostic and treatment modalities, my training goes far beyond this to encompass expertise both on the medical side and psychiatric side. I have additional trainings, including with Dr. Akash Kumar MD known for his multi layered diagnostic approach to assess nutritional, medical, psychiatric, and cognitive dimensions. Because of my background, I am uniquely able to identify oft missed root causes of subtle medical conditions that contribute to emotional difficulty.

I compassionately treated maximum security prisoners for many years working with severe cases of sexual/physical trauma, depression, anxiety, mood swings, personality disorders, anger, and psychosis.
See openings and book online at AnnArborPsych.com. Special interest in ADHD, anxiety, mood, and OCD. Therapeutic time cannot be rushed. As a medical doctor and psychiatrist, I address psychological AND medical factors by looking beyond the usual 20 psychiatric medications to investigate the underlying biological or psychological issues. Investigating may entail (based on current research): laboratory panels looking for chronic nutritional deficiencies; genetic testing (to predict what meds/supplements can help); brain scans; neuro exam; deeper forms of talk therapy

I have extensive experience dealing with mood and anxiety disorders, trauma, self-esteem problems, being stuck in life, grief, and self-inhibition.
Good therapy helps relieve the symptoms of the moment. Great therapy helps you change yourself so that you're more adaptive to whatever comes your way; it makes you wise. Most treatments are too narrow in their scope and only do part of the job. I specialize in using insight oriented psychotherapy to help people -- especially those who haven't gotten all they needed from attempts at standard treatment. With courage and time, the people I work with make dramatic, lasting changes. They feel and do better in every area of life. I'm a very highly rated provider because I know how to do what works and help you see the bigger picture.

My goal is to provide excellent psychiatric care to people of any race, background, gender identity, sexual orientation, size, or abilities. When I see you, I see a whole person. Our minds and our lives are complex. Many factors, both extrinsic (such as our backgrounds, families, environment, stressors) and intrinsic (such as our genetics, neurobiology, hormones, physical health, etc) impact us and our well-being. These factors also affect each other! Fortunately, this complexity also provides many pathways to understand and treat our problems. There are many entry points to the path to feeling whole, connected and well.

As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner I believe in caring for the whole person. I do this through an Internal Family Systems therapy lens, assessing, diagnosing, and caring for mental health concerns. Sometimes this means prescribing medication, and other times it means working together in psychotherapy to find the roots of pain.

Psychiatry can be much more than merely the identification of a mental disorder and the prescription of psychotropic medications or other interventions to manage the symptoms of the condition. Over the past 40 years I’ve developed an understanding of the resulting functional difficulties that can arise when these conditions are present, tools to characterize them and strategies to treat or meliorate them. My goal and a mission of the Center and its staff is to identify and treat these conditions using a wide range of modalities and to improve a broad range of functioning from executive functioning to social skill functioning.

Trauma and PTSD Psychiatrists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
