Currently accepting new patients! Seeking mental health treatment can be a daunting task. Congrats on taking this first step! At Kind Mind, we strive to create a warm, welcoming environment where patients can feel comfortable, heard and that they are in partnership with their doctor to meet their goals. Therapy can be a wonderful way for patients to understand themselves, relationships, and patterns of interacting in a deeper way to effect positive change in their lives. At times, medication is needed in conjunction with therapy to address acuity of symptoms and augment progress. We also provide medication evaluation and treatment.

My approach is guided by psychodynamic principles, real-world problem solving, and techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
I am a board-certified, Harvard-trained psychiatrist, and I help people with a wide range of problems, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, trauma, and psychosis. I combine medication management and psychotherapy in my practice. If you’re open to medication, we’ll work hard to find something that eases your pain. But the brain doesn't work in a vacuum--our experiences affect our neurochemicals, and psychotherapy actually changes the brain.

I work in a variety of ways in talk therapy to help you get what you want out of therapy. Most often that involves getting relief from painful emotional symptoms, improving personal relationships, becoming more productive in work, and being freed to take more pleasure from life. Therapy can also help you to gain greater control over your life, or change lifelong ways of coping that just aren't working as well as you'd like.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist with an interest in reproductive psychiatry. I have completed additional training in women's mental health through a fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and I have spent several years treating women with a variety of concerns in different clinical settings. While I am able to treat people across the adult lifespan, I particularly enjoy working with individuals who are trying to conceive, pregnant or postpartum. This can be in the form of a one-time consult to provide expert recommendations to be carried out by another treatment team or in the form of ongoing treatment with me.

I work best with adults who are motivated to understand themselves better through depth psychotherapy. While this motivation often stems from life transition, illness, relationship difficulties, or loss, there are times when we simply feel the urge to go deeper and explore our own minds.

With over three decades’ experience in academic and corporate environments, my current work as a Psychiatric DNP has evolved from observing the challenges and successes of colleagues and students and their relationship to emotional HEALTH and the ABILITY to FOCUS on daily and long-term goals. As a result of my Yale, Duke, and MGH psychiatric training, I’ve honed my observations into effective working theories about the biopsychosocial factors that influence peoples’ vitality and well-being. If you're currently struggling with academic, professional or emotional obstacles, I believe I can help.

I use an integrative approach based in anti-racism and cultural humility and involving aspects of CBT, trauma, mindfulness and psychodynamic psychotherapies.
Many teens and young adults struggle with various aspects of their lives, be it identity, relationships, work/school, or past experiences that affect how they feel and navigate the world. I work with many young adults who may seem high functioning at first glance but struggle with depression, anxiety, stress, or other emotional issues. I have particular experience supporting Asians and Asian Americans navigating issues of race, identity and culture. Talk therapy and medications can be a powerful way to help people process, make sense of, and change these patterns that hold them back from living the life they want.

I am able to take self-pay clients. I draw on expertise as a Harvard Medical Professor and Researcher to recommend personalized evidence based care for mood, anxiety, attention and organizational challenges. I am an expert on ADHD, which I research at Massachusetts General Hospital. I draw on training in neuropsychiatry, cognitive behavioral therapy, dynamic psychotherapy, nutraceutical research, and, (more importantly) lessons taught by working with a few thousand clients. If you want perspective on your mental health or ADHD options, or how to develop more of your own personal “user’s guide” for wellbeing, am happy to consult.

Psychodynamic Psychiatrists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
