Over the more than three decades that I have been in practice, the field of psychiatry has undergone dramatic changes. We now have available many medications that have significantly and substantially improved the quality of life and long term functioning of numerous people. A number of psychiatrists only see their patients for brief medication management visits on a reasonably infrequent basis. This is not a model of treatment that I employ or am comfortable with.

The most meaningful, rewarding part of my work, both for my patients and for me, is the healing relationship that develops in psychotherapy sessions. With prescribed medications or not, psychotherapy is a better way of taking advantage of my additional training and experience in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, a mind-body relationship specialty, and especially of my psychoanalytic training, a way of listening and observing which invites both the patient and the doctor to treat the mind with the curiosity, humility and respect it deserves.
