M. Bruce Sarlin, Psychiatrist in New York
“My style of therapy is of a psychodynamic nature, much akin to my belief that current emotional problems are related to patterns of thinking and feeling engendered in early childhood. Parental attitudes and feelings are transmitted to children based on parental experiences in growing up. These attributes are adopted and maintained in a repetition compulsion like fashion. Exploring these patterns of behavior and feelings through a process of free expression of thoughts, feelings and dream interpretation are techniques utilized to resolve the current adaptation, coping styles and problem areas.

“I have practiced Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis for over 30 years. I enjoy helping patients by using a dynamic approach that aims at identifying the conflicts that underlie their symptoms. My style is active and straightforward. I help patients to feel at ease with their feelings and to understand their sources, which I believe is an essential step in empowering them to change their lives. I recommend and prescribe medication when necessary but I always respect the patient's position about this and carefully assess their need for it.

Pavel Filimonov, Psychiatrist in New York
“Hello, my name is Dr. Pavel Filimonov, M.D. and I am a Holistic Psychiatrist. I am a bit different because I don't limit myself to just writing prescriptions and using talk therapy. I integrate Eastern healing techniques with the best researched principles of Western medicine, combining these elements to evoke change in the system as a whole--physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally. This combined approach helps me to deal with my patients' anxiety, fear and overwhelment in a much more efficient way, markedly REDUCING NEED FOR MEDICATIONS. *IMPORTANT: Insurance pays ONLY a small portion of Holistic treatment.

Sharon Packer, Psychiatrist in New York
“Creative people deserve creative solutions to relieve distress--but without compromising creativity. After a comprehensive initial evaluation, I combine natural techniques, state-of-the-art psychopharmacology, brief CBT, arts therapies, even psychodrama. Your treatment is customized! Together, we identify future goals, prioritize present concerns, review past history (medical, cultural, family, interpersonal, educational, vocational), identifying past treatments that helped, avoiding whatever harmed. Prefer natural solutions? See my article on "What Wordsworth Knew: Daffodils as Antidepressants." Want a psychopharmacologist who appreciates medical mimics of mental disorders and avoids med side effects? Please see my Psychiatric Times series, "Why Psychiatrists are Physicians First."

Richard L Malen, Psychiatrist in New York
“I have expert knowledge of evaluation, medication treatment and psychotherapy. My approach is to listen carefully, understand your particular needs then tailor customized treatments. For those already in psychotherapy or not having that need, I am happy to provide medication treatment alone. I will monitor your responses to medication carefully so that you do not experience side effects and to see your gains are maximized. I practice an interpersonal form of psychotherapy. In this, interaction is encouraged rather than listening alone. I try to make myself available for your questions and return calls within a day. Appointments are available usually within one week.

Edward Ratush, Psychiatrist in New York
“Dr. Ratush is a psychiatrist specializing in Mood Disorders(depression, mania), Anxiety Disorders (panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder, PTSD), Arousal Disorders (insomnia, fatigue, shift work disorder and Adult ADHD). A particular interest of Dr. Ratush is the interplay of mental health disorders and substance use disorders. Since most people with a substance use disorder have a primary mental health condition simple paradigms of treatment often fail. And while it seems from the outside to be "just another relapse" often this behavior is a testament of inappropriate, improper or ineffective treatment for the mental health condition. Dr. Ratush is committed to improving recovery rates for patients.

“Born and raised in the Hudson Valley, I consider it an honor and privilege to be able to practice Psychiatry in the place I love most...home! I am double Board Certified, in both General Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. Being an expert in both fields gives me insight into both conditions and how they are often interrelated. Often times patient's may use drugs/alcohol as a way to deal with stressful situations and it unfortunately can lead to addiction. Fact is there have been amazing breakthrough treatments that are helping patients live the life they have always wanted!

“I have been practicing adult, child and adolescent psychiatry for several decades. Although I prescribe medication whenever needed I still cherish the opportunity to practice old fashioned talk therapy. I have practiced this therapy from the vantage point originally taught by psychoanalyst Karen Horney, who emphasized that we can each outgrow difficulties for our entire lives. My practice consists of people of all ages with any psychiatric problem including anxiety, depression, family problems, relationship issues, school problems, physical illness, substance abuse and personality disorders.

About Psychiatrists, meds and Psychiatric Nurses.

A Psychiatrist in New York is a qualified medical doctor who specializes in treating mental health issues and diagnosable disorders.

New York Psychiatrists differ from other mental health professionals in that they may prescribe medication or psychotropics. Psychiatrists may conduct physical examinations, order and interpret lab tests and brain image scans, such as CT scans, CAT Scans and MRIs.

Some psychiatric practitioners in New York specialize in age groups (so check for New York child psychiatrists or adolescent psychiatrists in New York). Those who work with the elderly are called geriatric psychiatrists or geropsychiatrists.

Other related specialties include psychopharmacology (certain states license Psychopharmacologists), psychiatric genetics and neuroimaging.

Psychiatric nurses in New York, or mental health nurses, specialize in nursing care for people with mental illness or mental distress. New York Psychiatric nurses receive training in psychological therapies (such as CBT), building therapeutic alliance with clients and dealing with challenging behavior. Importantly, they are trained to administer psychiatric medication (or 'psychiatric meds') and, in very limited ways, to prescribe meds.

Nurses monitor for side effects and responses to medical treatments and offer information on meds so that clients can make informed choices about their use.
