I have an eclectic private practice. I treat adults from all walks of life struggling with all manner of issues, including depression, bipolar disorder, social anxiety, panic, and stress associated with difficult personal adjustments. My goal is to tailor treatment to a patient's individual needs, and I make use of a number of therapeutic modalities (psychopharmacological, interpersonal, cognitive/behavioral, supportive, and psychodynamic) to try to help my patients feel well. My personal style in therapy tends to be more on the interactive end of the spectrum.

Seeking treatment is a difficult decision to make and for that I am here to congratulate you on the courage and strength it took to embark on your journey of healing and wellness. Regardless of the difficulties you are experiencing, together we will engage in a mutual collaboration to explore your treatment goals and build insight and awareness into your inner self. At times, the mind can become our greatest enemy with thoughts that can be hard to share with others. However, do not fear, as my role is to create a safe and trusting therapeutic space, where thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are non-judgmentally explored.

Areas of focus include depression and other mood disorders, anxiety, stress, trauma-related disorders, and sleep issues, among others.
Mental health is an integral, yet often overlooked, part of our wellness. In our modern, fast-paced lives self-care is the typically the first thing that we choose not to prioritize. In recognition of the commitment needed to begin treatment, I strive to work with my clients on an individualized level to move toward their wellness goals.

Are you struggling with anxiety, depression, anger, or feelings of isolation? Perhaps you’re feeling stuck and yearning for positive change. The past four years have strained the resources of so many people. I am a highly experienced and skilled psychiatrist offering both psychotherapy and medication management. I find psychotherapy is often vital to recovery. If you are considering psychoactive medication I am eager to discuss it and get to know your needs. I am particularly proficient in helping people through mood, anxiety disorders and trauma. I also treat those struggling with focus and attention concerns.

My goal in practice is to work together with each patient to develop a customized plan that will address their needs. I am a strong believer in psychotherapy and have experience in individual, group, couple and family therapy. However, when therapy has not provided adequate relief, medication management is always available. I will collaborate with patients to find the best treatment. I am also on faculty at Columbia University/ NYSPI and actively involved in research (specific areas include opioid dependence, pain and complicated grief). This experience allows me to integrate up to date treatment in my practice.

Hi! My name is Dr. Sara Chun, MD. I am a board-certified psychiatrist who provides medication management. I hope to provide an informative space for patients to consider different treatment options and collaboratively find their personal balance between therapy, skills, and medicine. I also want to understand any questions or apprehensions that folks may have about taking psychiatric medications. While I primarily manage medications, I incorporate cognitive behavioral, dialectic, and psychodynamic therapy approaches into my sessions in hopes of making our meetings more useful and robust.

We have all known times when we thought we had known the direction that our lives would take, yet we find that we've lost our way. Many of us never seemed to have found a way to be ourselves which feels true and natural. We may be left feeling distant from what ought to be our better selves, or perhaps we feel strangely isolated from those who could or should be our closest companions. We might feel sad, frustrated, anxious or lonely. We might not yet even know what our real feelings are. Still, we sense that there can be a better path. Sometimes that way may be medicine, sometimes it may be skilled and professionally attuned talk.

Sleep or Insomnia Psychiatrists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
