I am Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University and a board-certified psychiatrist committed to offering comprehensive care for individuals, couples and families. I practice and value psychotherapy because it can be an enormously powerful tool to enhance personal growth, learning and self-discovery. Being a physician enables me to offer the option of medication when needed. This has the advantage of integrating both types of treatments with one provider only. If you are already in psychotherapy, I will work in coordination with your therapist to achieve the best result.

I treat people with anxiety, panic attacks, mood disorders, eating and sleep disorders. Issues related to work and/or relationships are also common reasons for seeking treatment. After an evaluation, I will suggest a treatment plan for you. Commonly this includes a form of psychotherapy, and sometimes medication. I may also suggest some behavioral changes. A good treatment plan should be thoughtful and practical, taking into account your strengths as well as difficulties. Happiness and a greater sense of well being are usually some of the goals.

Modern life is a complex interplay of work, family and friends. Particularly at times of transition, interpersonal dynamics can become difficult and painful, and we find ourselves in need of advice and support. I have experience working with individuals facing personal challenges: young adult life, marital issues, work life balance and raising children. I combine the use of medication with psychodynamic psychotherapy to treat individuals suffering from a variety of conditions including anxiety, mood disorders, adjustment disorders and attention deficit disorder.

Each person who comes to see me has his or her own unique story, and I will do my best, through careful listening grounded upon years of specialized training and experience, to understand what is troubling you and what could help you move forward. You may be seeking help with relationships, work, parenting, identity, or problems with depression, anxiety, or other issues. Many people who seek help worry that their problems are too long-standing to get better, or are simply a product of circumstances. But neither of these ideas needs to get in the way of productive treatment.

We look forward to speaking with you regarding you or your family members’ mental and emotional wellbeing.
I'm Dr. Mitchell, DNP, PMHNP- BC and US Air Force Veteran. As a psychiatric provider, my aim is to identify, address and modify conditions, limiting patterns and behaviors that diminish function and suppress growth. My philosophy is Bio-Psycho-Social; I acknowledge the whole dynamic being and maintain the explicit intent of fostering personal accountability, growth and development. I approach each therapeutic encounter as a unique opportunity to facilitate the process of expanding awareness and elevating consciousness. We believe illuminating barriers is the first step toward eliminating them.

Everyone worries but do you worry about everything? Do you forget what you were worrying about, and then worry about that? Do you lay in bed at night trying to go to sleep, but you can't because you are worrying about what happened during the day? I can help you with that. Have you been extremely sad for a while, and nothing seems to help? Are you always late to work, or meetings? Do you lose track of time and end up handing in your projects late even though you intended to finish early? These are just some of the things I can help you with.

Family Therapy Psychiatrists
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
