As a Nurse Practitioner, the core of my training was based on seeing a person holistically. In practice, this involves looking at all factors of a person's life, not just the issue that brought them into therapy. Although I am a prescriber, I believe in psychosocial interventions as a first line approach to healing. However, if we collaboratively decide that medications would be helpful, I provide those services as well. Most people have found it helpful to receive therapy and medication management from one person.

Guided by my belief that authentic, meaningful relationships drive high quality care, I partner with our patients and families to first treat psychiatric symptoms, and then move into a preventative approach. I help my patients, both kids or adults, to discover and build on their own strengths, educate them about the science behind how their brains work, and then provide them with the necessary tools to become their own health expert. I refuse to believe that my patients cannot get better, and I work tirelessly with you to help you build a better life.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist who completed training at the NYU School of Medicine. I understand that the decision to ask for help can be a scary one for many reasons. Your mental health can be impacted by your current stressors, prior stressful life experiences, and your cultural background. The first step towards achieving wellness is asking for help. My approach to mental health and wellbeing recognizes these experiences and provides a professional, safe and confidential place to address your concerns and get the care that you need.

Life can feel like an uphill battle when you’re grappling with depression, anxiety, or ADHD. Each day can seem like a marathon. The weight of depression can make even the simplest tasks feel monumental. It drains you of energy and robs you of joy. Anxiety can leave you on edge and unable to relax. When you live with ADHD, you never succeed on tests, no matter how much you prepare yourself. In the midst of these struggles, you have needs and goals like everyone else. You want relief from the weight of depression, to feel like your usual self again. You want to reclaim control over your thoughts. And you dream of success in school.

I am an ANCC board-certified Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and am able to serve clients across the lifespan. I have an especial passion for working with children, teens, and young adults (up to age 26, with some flexibility). My treatment approach respects the client as a whole and takes into consideration their familial, psychosocial, interpersonal, and medical background when formulating treatment recommendations. I may prescribe clients psychotropic medication, but I also place emphasis on other domains of wellbeing, like nutrition, exercise, interpersonal and familial relationships, and psychotherapy.

I am a psychiatrist who deeply believes in the importance of quality of life. Living with a healthy quality of life seems simple but is actually very challenging. Given the complex nature of romantic relationships, family/friend relationships, work stress, vocational aspirations, financial stress, life changes, and decision-making, just to name a few examples, difficult emotions seem natural. Such emotions can include anxiety, sadness, anger, regret, rage, loneliness, boredom, irritability, frustration, and disappointment. I am naturally an empathic person, and having studied, trained, and graduated from Harvard, Yale, and Cornell, I am a dedicated psychiatrist who desires to, and is trained to, help you.

My ideal client has to be willing to be unwittingly honest and want to help themselves. It cannot be one sided. Their needs are wanting positive methods to cope with past and present trauma. They want to thrive and not merely just survive. They may have one short term goal, and that is okay. We all have to start somewhere.

Oppositional Defiance (ODD) Psychiatrists

What is the most effective treatment for oppositional defiant disorder?

The treatment of Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) will involve multiple approaches designed to help both the youngster and their parents, sometimes including medication. A therapist will help a child learn ways to regulate their emotions, curb their impulsiveness, and counteract anger, defiance, and disruption, while showing parents ways to bring these lessons into their home. A technique designed for children with conditions like ODD, known as Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS), may also be used. CPS addresses a child’s concerns and rewards appropriate responses while discouraging harsh punishment or criticism.

How does treatment for oppositional defiant disorder work?

Treatment for ODD addresses the issues underlying a child’s defiance and disruption, the emotional regulation and impulse-control skills they lack, and the way adults respond to them. ODD therapy is based on the idea that children with the disorder understand the difference between right and wrong, that they want to behave well, and that, with help, they can. By responding to the child with empathy instead of harsh criticism, ignoring nonviolent behaviors, and rewarding positive actions, a therapist, and the other adults in a child’s life, can help children improve their behavior.

How long does therapy for oppositional defiant disorder take?

Therapy for oppositional defiant disorder is not a short-term undertaking. Depending on the severity of a child’s symptoms, their age, the presence of other conditions like ADHD, anxiety or a mood disorder, and their family dynamic, it can take months before improvement is noted. The cooperation of parents and teachers is crucial, because the skills learned in therapy must be practiced in real-world situations, with all their potential triggers.

Does oppositional defiant disorder go away?

ODD can remit following treatment. ODD is often diagnosed in nursery school, and early intervention is essential for a positive prognosis. In two-thirds of children, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, symptoms resolve within three years.
