I am committed to working collaboratively with my patients to address emotional distress and difficulties in daily living. This could manifest as depression, anxiety, problems with intimacy or self-esteem, trouble staying focused or feeling connected, feeling excessively angry or guilty, or trouble finding meaning in life, to name only a few. I listen deeply, to understand not only who my patients are right now and what has brought them in, but also what has happened to them in the past and how that has affected the present.

Dr. Edelman is Board Certified in Psychiatry and Board Eligible in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She completed her psychiatry residency training at the Medical College of Georgia and at SUNY Downstate. She completed her Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship at SUNY Downstate. She has practiced in various settings over her career, including inpatient child and adolescent psychiatric units, adult and child academic outpatient treatment clinics, emergency psychiatric treatment, and community psychiatry.

I am a board certified adult and child psychiatrist, and I'm also board certified in integrative and holistic medicine. I treat anxiety, attention, and mood difficulties, including adult and child ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety, panic attacks, trauma, and depression. When necessary, I recommend medication, with the lowest effective doses. I recommend traditional and natural treatments along with practical suggestions about communication, lifestyle, and stress management. I am on faculty at NYU School of Medicine.

I am trained to treat people at all life stages. I do especially enjoy helping children and adolescents feel better and reach their full potential. When working with children, it is crucial to do an in-depth evaluation to look at the "whole picture," as all children exist within their own web of relationships (family, friends, schools, extracurricular activities). Susan P. Sherkow, M.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at BPI, a Supervising Child and Adolescent Analyst at NYPSI, and on the faculties of Mt. Sinai and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Sherkow has published in JAPA, The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child, and Psychoanalytic Inquiry, among others, on the topics of autism spectrum disorder, primal scene, intergenerational eating disorders, the diagnosis of sexual abuse in young children, watched play, and working in analysis with children under five.

I am Ioana Shirley, psychiatrist with board certifications in child, and adult psychiatry. After many years of private practice work in Birmingham AL, as well as international work in Europe and South East Asia, I am opening a practice in New York City. Anything that we as humans get exposed to in life can cause us to develop feelings and fantasies. At times when these feelings and fantasies are considered "unacceptable" due to fears, upbringing, culture, religion, norm or whatever else, such feelings and fantasies become unconscious. It means they exist and govern our lives but we are not conscious/aware of them. Such unconscious materials lead to psychiatric and physical manifestations including but not limited to anxiety, depression, physical ailments and many other presentations. I am trained to explore such unconscious feelings/fantasies in children, adolescents, and adults.

As a Nurse Practitioner, the core of my training was based on seeing a person holistically. In practice, this involves looking at all factors of a person's life, not just the issue that brought them into therapy. Although I am a prescriber, I believe in psychosocial interventions as a first line approach to healing. However, if we collaboratively decide that medications would be helpful, I provide those services as well. Most people have found it helpful to receive therapy and medication management from one person.
