Hello and welcome! I am a double board certified general and child/adolescent psychiatrist. My approach to patient care equally values therapy and medication management. I strive to understand patients as more than a list of psychiatric symptoms — instead, I see patients as complex individuals, who are trying their best given their personal life histories and unique neurobiology. I truly work to be wholistic and listen to my patients.

The brain is an organ where specialized treatment and medications may be needed to help restore physiological balance and correct functioning. Keeping all aspects of each individual in mind, I prescribe medications when needed and work with the team of therapists at LifeCare so together, we can address the whole person. Therapy can be an effective tool in restoring the soul, which has a direct impact on the well-being of our mind, will, and emotional state. Therapy can also allow us to clearly map out a spiritual path and help us maintain an active relationship with God.

As of 11/27/23 I have No Current Openings for new patients due to a full schedule (I do not keep a waiting list, but feel free to check back after the first of the year). I am a psychiatrist offering medication treatments and/or psychotherapy as appropriate. Most of my patients struggle with anxiety or depression, although I also have broad experience in treating ADHD, bipolar disorder, as well as various issues of life adjustments and relationships. Note that I do not specialize in treating children and adolescents, couples therapy, or addiction treatment. I offer either video or in-person sessions.

Mari-Jane Shaffer is a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Advaita Integrated Medicine in Raleigh, North Carolina. Specifically, she is a post masters' certificate prepared advanced practice nurse. She has been a registered nurse for 38 years and a nurse practitioner for 8 years. After working with patients in a variety of settings as an RN for 28 years, she decided to pursue a Master of Science in Nursing degree at Duke University specializing in Family Practice. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, she realized that working with patients on their mental health was pivotal in order for them to achieve optimal wellness.

I use a complete approach to patient care, with emphasis on providing psychoeducation to patients and their families on the mind-body connection. I encourage my patients to be active advocates and participants in their treatment planning and care, including the use of complementary and natural therapies. I am also a strong proponent of optimizing outcomes through the concurrent use of therapy and mindfulness training in addition to pharmacological and other treatments. I treat adult men and women with depression, anxiety disorders (including generalized anxiety and panic disorder), obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and substance use disorders.
