Most people, whether they have a psychiatric illness or not, need psychotherapy, at some point in their lives. I'm here to help determine what's wrong and how to best help. If a medicine is helpful, I'm trained to prescribe it. In most situations, medicine, alone, is not enough to help people disentangle themselves from the feelings, thoughts, or behaviors that have interfered with their functioning or caused such discomfort. Problematic patterns have developed over a long time, but for 'good reasons'. Until we know why, we're unlikely to change them.

See openings and book online at AnnArborPsych.com. Special interest in ADHD, anxiety, mood, and OCD. Therapeutic time cannot be rushed. As a medical doctor and psychiatrist, I address psychological AND medical factors by looking beyond the usual 20 psychiatric medications to investigate the underlying biological or psychological issues. Investigating may entail (based on current research): laboratory panels looking for chronic nutritional deficiencies; genetic testing (to predict what meds/supplements can help); brain scans; neuro exam; deeper forms of talk therapy

I believe that nurturing a collaborative physician-patient relationship is key to helping patients gain a deeper understanding of their mental health. I strive to create a therapeutic environment where patients can feel comfortable discussing their concerns. My treatment process involves learning about the issues most pressing to my patients. I believe in a tailored and integrated approach that utilizes psychotherapy (including psychodynamic psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy), lifestyle modifications, psychiatric medications, and/or supplements.

My training and experience spans psychodynamic therapy, psychoanalysis, overseeing a large outpatient psychiatric clinic, training of residents and interns, and psychoanalytic education and supervision. Good therapy helps relieve the symptoms of the moment. Great therapy helps you change yourself so that you're more adaptive to whatever comes your way; it makes you wise. Most treatments are too narrow in their scope and only do part of the job. I specialize in using insight oriented psychotherapy to help people -- especially those who haven't gotten all they needed from attempts at standard treatment. With courage and time, the people I work with make dramatic, lasting changes. They feel and do better in every area of life. I'm a very highly rated provider because I know how to do what works and help you see the bigger picture.

As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner I believe in caring for the whole person. I do this through an Internal Family Systems therapy lens, assessing, diagnosing, and caring for mental health concerns. Sometimes this means prescribing medication, and other times it means working together in psychotherapy to find the roots of pain.

You shouldn't have to wait months to see a psychiatrist or settle for a provider who's not a good fit. You deserve someone who shows you they care about your future. I have immediate openings and can meet with you virtually in the comfort of your home or office. I'll listen to your story and work to understand the important details of your situation. I like to provide an atmosphere of warmth, humor, and acceptance during your visits. Regardless of whether you've taken psychiatric meds before, I can help you examine the alternatives and decide what might be best. Medications might even assist you in reaching your therapy goals.

Psychiatry can be much more than merely the identification of a mental disorder and the prescription of psychotropic medications or other interventions to manage the symptoms of the condition. Over the past 40 years I’ve developed an understanding of the resulting functional difficulties that can arise when these conditions are present, tools to characterize them and strategies to treat or meliorate them. My goal and a mission of the Center and its staff is to identify and treat these conditions using a wide range of modalities and to improve a broad range of functioning from executive functioning to social skill functioning.

Currently accepting new patient consultations (Updated January 2024). I believe my role as a Psychiatrist is not to cure but instead to join my patients on their unique paths to mental wellness. Having trained at the University of Michigan, I take an evidence-based approach to mental health. However, in addition to traditional medication management, I have studied multiple forms of psychotherapy, opened myself to wellness-based methods, explored complex topics with patients from race to spirituality, and remain open to learning more approaches to mental healthcare.

Relationship Issues Psychiatrists
While need for human connection appears to be innate, the ability to form healthy, loving relationships is learned. Some evidence suggests that the ability to form a stable relationship starts to form in infancy, in a child's earliest experiences with a caregiver who reliably meets the infant's needs for food, care, warmth, protection, stimulation, and social contact. Such relationships are not destiny, but they are theorized to establish deeply ingrained patterns of relating to others. The end of a relationship, however, is often a source of great psychological anguish.
