I am a psychiatrist and Harvard Medical School faculty member with expertise treating a wide range of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, ADHD, substance use, and psychosis. I have additional expertise in grief/bereavement, supporting patients through complex medical decisions, advanced care planning, and anxiety disorders. My career has focused on humanistic and relational approaches to taking care of children, adolescents, adults and families. Shame, stigma and loss impact development in a multitude of ways, and can deter people from reaching their personal and professional goals. Disruption due to trauma, loss, medical and mental health issues can have long lasting effects. I practice psychodynamic psychotherapy and focus on supporting one's resilience and strengths while exploring experiences and feelings which may interfere with forward movement.

Victoria Counseling Services is an outpatient Adult Psychiatry, established in 2015 following the sudden death of a beloved younger sister, Victoria, who suffered from severe depression and PTSD for most of her adult years. As a patient, expect to be an active participant in your treatment plan.

Growing up and parenting, even under the best circumstances, are full of challenges. When you or your child is struggling, it makes each of those challenges even more difficult. Dr. Jennifer Koch specializes in helping adults and children navigate these difficult times whether they are brought on by life stressors, grief, behavior patterns, or illness. She works with individuals and their families to evaluate their circumstances, to provide personalized recommendations, and to address their concerns so that they may return to a more comfortable, peaceful way of life.

Reaching out for help can be scary, and in recognition of this, I strive to provide care in a warm, welcoming, and safe environment. I believe a relationship with mutual respect and trust is a requirement for effective psychiatric care. Being honest, transparent, and “real” with patients is the bedrock of this relationship, and I approach care with this mindset. I’m non-judgmental, relaxed, and will always treat you with compassion and dignity. I use a collaborative approach, and believe that you must be involved in decision-making for your treatment to be effective.

It's hard to see a psychiatrist! I see people in distress due to a crisis,a loss, a trauma or a major life change. This distress manifests as depression,mood swings,anxiety, racing thoughts,paranoia,insomnia etc.People are complicated. I do a comprehensive evaluation listening for various psychological, emotional and biologic "clues". This is an interactive and iterative process. "Our" formulation guides the treatment. I practice both psychotherapy and psychopharmacology. I often consult for colleagues in psychology and social work regarding the use of medications.I then manage the medications as part of the treatment team.

I then received a MSN specializing in family medicine from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. I earned a Post-Master’s Graduate Certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health from the University of Massachusetts Worcester Medical School. Throughout my career, I’ve worked in diverse healthcare settings, including primary care, surgical, psychiatric, and within the VA healthcare system, where I dedicated my services to veterans.

Dr. Toppelberg is an experienced, Harvard-trained child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist, usually working with ages 3-30. He has focused on issues of performance at work, study and competitive sports. He regularly works with tour-level tennis players and other professional and student athletes.
