Do you ever think you are crazy for feeling the way you do? Are you afraid that nothing will ever change? Sometimes therapy alone is not enough. Genetics play a significant role in your mental health. And prolonged stress and suffering can change your brain chemistry. When prescribed wisely, medications can minimize the static caused by a chemical imbalance, thus improving your ability to think clearly and use therapy to make better decisions. Explore your options. You do not have to keep feeling the way you do.

Hello! My name is Daina Kakana and I am a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I understand how difficult life’s challenges can be and believe that everyone can use support as they navigate through life. Throughout our sessions, I will always endeavor to provide a space where clients feel comfortable and at ease as they receive the help they need and deserve to live a more balanced and happy life. Often, we may feel bogged down by anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues, and other struggles that make life feel overwhelming. We may also feel as though we are not on the right path, or that we are too broken to be successful.

Lisa embraces a humanistic and holistic approach to care with a commitment to individualization and collaboration. She believes many episodes of depression and anxiety are rooted in underlying emotional wounds related to sexual, physical, and/or emotional trauma, including direct and indirect abuse or neglect. Lisa is committed to evidence-based medication management. She emphasizes the complementary role of psycho-pharmacological treatment in establishing and maintaining functionality while "doing the work in therapy".

Welcome! I’ve been practicing in medicine for two decades; first as an RN, and then as an Adult NP. I worked with clients through depression, anxiety, grief, sleep disorders, pain, and chronic and acute medical conditions, for end of life care, and interventional procedures. After seeing the difficulty my patients were having accessing more specialized mental health care, I decided to advance my degree and completed my Post Masters as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Across the Lifespan at SUNY Stony Brook. I offer mental health care in NY & CT primarily via telehealth and meet with clients in person on an as needed basis.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Psychiatrists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
