I am a psychiatrist in private practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts with board certification in adult and child & adolescent psychiatry. I have 15 years of experience in practice and most commonly treat ADHD, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, and substance use. I specialize in individual therapy and provide guidance to parents and families. I normally emphasize diet, exercise, and sleeping habits as essential elements to therapy. If I think it makes sense, I will prescribe medications, collaborating with my patients and their healthcare providers to make safe and appropriate medication choices.

It's not necessarily easy to start (or restart) therapy. I am committed to honoring and transforming suffering through a compassionate, trauma-sensitive, eclectic approach. I trained in psychiatry at UMass, and in child and adolescent psychiatry at Cambridge Health Alliance. My undergraduate and graduate education at Harvard, in visual art and architecture respectively, has provided a foundation for my comfort in exploring the unexpected and unknown. I bring this openness, creativity, and wonder to my therapeutic work.

I am a board certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner supporting individuals and families in addressing mental health challenges. I provide psychotherapy, medication management, and genetic testing for children, adolescents, and adults. As a therapist and prescriber, I strive to develop an environment where patients feel safe to share their most authentic selves and feel empowered to work together toward meaningful solutions. I take a collaborative approach with patients to develop an individualized treatment plan that meets their unique needs.

How may I help you? I am a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner-board-certified. My private practice is in Coolidge Corner, Brookline. I offer consultation, psychotherapy, and medication management. I started my career as a school-based support team MSW in the South Bronx. I became increasingly interested in Yoga, a Mind-Body practice that has changed my life. At fifty, I returned to graduate school for an MSN and was certified as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. My goal is to help you better manage your personal and professional challenges, experience joy, and ultimately improve the quality of your life.

I believe deeply that people can change their lives, and I have dedicated my life's work to just that. Patterns of behavior always exist for good reason. They begin as a way of adapting to circumstances, then the situation changes, and years later, what was once a way to cope has now become a liability. There is nothing more gratifying than assisting people in recognizing these lifelong patterns in which they have been entwined, and learning how to slip those bonds. I draw on training in neuropsychiatry, cognitive behavioral therapy, dynamic psychotherapy, nutraceutical research, and, (more importantly) lessons taught by working with a few thousand clients. My career has focused on humanistic and relational approaches to taking care of children, adolescents, adults and families. Shame, stigma and loss impact development in a multitude of ways, and can deter people from reaching their personal and professional goals. Disruption due to trauma, loss, medical and mental health issues can have long lasting effects. I practice psychodynamic psychotherapy and focus on supporting one's resilience and strengths while exploring experiences and feelings which may interfere with forward movement.

Dr. Toppelberg is an experienced, Harvard-trained child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist, usually working with ages 3-30. He evaluates and treats emotional/ behavioral difficulties including ADHD, depression, trauma, stress, anxiety, and selective mutism, and those preventing weight loss. He has focused on issues of performance at work, study and competitive sports. He regularly works with tour-level tennis players and other professional and student athletes. He is an expert in neurodevelopmental disabilities, as well as learning and language disabilities. He runs psychiatric services at an excellent school for children/adolescents with autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities, the prestigious New England Center for Children.

How do we learn to understand and trust what our feelings are saying to us? What makes it possible to change entrenched ways of coping that are not working? My focus in therapy is to help patients deepen their personal relationships and find their work more rewarding; medication can sometimes help alleviate symptoms that interfere with achieving these goals. By providing a safe and supportive environment for the patient's search for self-understanding, and listening closely to what is being said and not said, I collaborate with the patient in finding creative and pragmatic ways to overcome obstacles to change.

Anne Turley is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in practice since 2014. She is well-versed in treating a wide range of diagnoses in patients aged 6-65. Anne is comfortable reaching outside traditional practice settings to care for patients and has embraced telemedicine as the key access to care advancement of the decade. Anne’s specialty areas include teenagers, autism spectrum disorder, mood disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, treatment-resistant anxiety disorders, and multi-diagnosis cases.

My undergraduate training was at Harvard University, my medical school training was at Boston University, my 4 year Adult Psychiatry Residency was at Walter Reed, and my 2 year Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship was at Duke University, where I was Chief Fellow. I worked at Duke University and Womack Army Medical Center as an Adult Psychiatrist, then as a Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist for the past 20 years.
