I specialize in treating children, adolescents, and adults suffering from anxiety disorders, mood disorders (depression, bipolar disorder), OCD, trauma, personality disorders, and experiencing interpersonal difficulties.
I am a Harvard-trained, Harvard-affiliated, board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist. I strongly believe that the best psychiatric care is centered on the whole person, not just on a diagnosis or specific medication. I provide weekly therapy and work with patients to determine if medications can be of help. I do not believe that everyone needs a medication, but they can be useful in treating particular psychiatric symptoms; I will work with you in order to find the best treatment modality that meets your goals and needs.

Are you at a point in your life where you identify things need to change? Perhaps your mood or old life patterns are no longer serving you? Is anxiety or depression becoming a major part of your daily life? Are you considering medications to help with your mental health for the first time but and would prefer trying a holistic approach? Perhaps you're currently prescribed medications but not sure if they are working. Patients who often succeed under my care are committed to transformation, willing to make lifestyle changes (ex. follow sleep, diet, exercise recommendations), and are receptive to discussing medication recommendations.

I enjoy helping patients with Anxiety, ADHD, Panic Disorder, Depression, Sleep Issues and stress related to balancing work with family.
Hi my name is Michele Graney, NP, and I would welcome the opportunity to help you. I know that reaching out for support can feel awkward & that it can take time to build comfort, trust, and rapport. As a experienced NP, I do not believe in scheduling "speedy appointments" as this compromises quality of care. You will have ample time to share your concerns. I take the time to listen in order to fully understand you. I believe in being open and honest with each patient. I strive to build and maintain a trusting and genuine therapeutic alliance with each patient.

Anxiety Psychiatrists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
