Dr Borhan Darmal, MD is a psychiatrist who is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology a chapter of the American Board of Medical Specialties. Dr. Darmal was raised in Hawaii and received his undergraduate degree from San Diego state university. He earned his medical degree from St George’s university school of medicine. He completed his psychiatric residency at Lewisgale medical center in southwest Virginia, where he became interested in incorporating spirituality into the biopsychosocial model. Dr. Darmal aims to provide patients the highest level of care.

Key elements of good mental health care include (1) a solid bond between patient and psychiatrist, strengthened by open communication, mutual respect, and mutual trust; (2) involvement of spouse, or other close family member or close friend, in the treatment process; (3) coordination of care involving communication of psychiatrist with patient's primary care provider, and with other professionals, who provide care for the patient's emotional and physical needs.

I use a complete approach to patient care, with emphasis on providing psychoeducation to patients and their families on the mind-body connection. I encourage my patients to be active advocates and participants in their treatment planning and care, including the use of complementary and natural therapies. I am also a strong proponent of optimizing outcomes through the concurrent use of therapy and mindfulness training in addition to pharmacological and other treatments.
