My therapy is relationship-based, and draws from supportive, psychodynamic, and cognitively based traditions.
I am a Board Certified Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, with advanced training in psychotherapy and medication management. I particularly enjoy working with clients who are struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, and the adjustment--both physical and psychological--to parenthood. My background as a Community Health Nurse visiting pregnant and newly parenting families, and my understanding of the hormonal and biological factors that are intertwined with emotional issues during this time, make me an excellent choice for prenatal and postpartum anxiety and depression. I have a certificate from Postpartum Support International in treating perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

My approach to psychotherapy draws mainly from psychoanalytic (also known as psychodynamic) psychotherapy.
Hello, I offer psychotherapy and medication management for adults in Oregon. Presently, I am offering both telemedicine visits and in person visits. My preferred approach to working with you is to get a good sense of who you are, how difficulties started, and how you can find solutions for yourself. When I prescribe medication we will talk about the options in detail and then help you decide what makes most sense.

As a psychiatrist and psychodynamic psychotherapist with over 25 years of experience, I enjoy working with a wide variety of mental health concerns. I have developed special expertise in helping persons with self esteem issues, relationship problems, midlife and career transitions and trauma. I believe that talking through ones struggles, burdens, losses and pain leads to greater fulfillment in life, a sense of hope and joy. It is a privilege to be invited to accompany another on their personal journey. Psychotherapy is hard work but well worth the investment in oneself for discovering potential in love, work and play.

The foundation of my practice is a thoughtful, integrated treatment approach that centers around psychodynamic psychotherapy. For adolescents and adults, I offer a more intensive form of psychodynamic psychotherapy, known as psychoanalytic psychotherapy, for those interested in a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships. I also work with children and their parents, and I provide psychodynamically informed play therapy for children who need help expressing, working through, and mastering difficult feelings. I am board certified in both general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry.

I specialize in psychodynamic psychotherapy, which is well-suited to people who want to get to the root of long-term problems and patterns that continually crop up and get in the way of living a fulfilled life.
I treat clients who are seeking both talk therapy and medication management. When clients receive therapy and medication management from the same provider, I find that this leads to better outcomes, less medication, and greater satisfaction in care. In our first few sessions, I'll listen to you intently and then we'll determine a path forward. Most of my clients start to feel better within a few months.

I work with patients individually and have been inspired to witness personal transformation and growth even after the most difficult life circumstances. My practice includes longer term psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, short-term consultation, and supervision of mental health professionals of all disciplines. Although my approach is primarily psychodynamic, I believe it is important to maintain an integrated treatment perspective because every person is unique. Particular areas of interest include the impact and psychological cost of keeping family secrets, personal growth over the adult life cycle, building resiliency, privacy

My areas of expertise include Mind Body Medicine and the psychodynamic treatment of anxiety spectrum disorders, depression, trauma, and issues relating to body image. I teach and speak extensively on how the physiologic mechanisms of the inflammatory process promotes the above disease states and how, through the utilization of psychoanalytic and mindfulness techniques, optimal change can be achieved. I utilize the combination of psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy and mindfulness heavily supported in the medical literature in my private practice.

I practice a contemporary version of psychodynamic psychotherapy rooted in the psychoanalytic tradition.
Despite being successful, many creative and talented people live with a negative inner world. Often thinking, "If I only had someone to talk to." They are stuck but reluctant to seek help. It seems shameful or overwhelming. The fact is, once we are able to connect many of my patients quickly start to feel better. I listen in a way that respects their own perspective, pace and autonomy. Together we strive to deepen our understanding of the problems, while expanding our appreciation of a unique inner life.

I am a general psychiatrist who treats adults suffering from anxiety, depression, and the effects of childhood or adult trauma via weekly psychodynamic psychotherapy and, if needed, medication management. In therapy we will seek to create a safe and nonjudgmental environment where you can come to know and understand yourself more fully through exploration of your current experience, memories, dreams, and more. In my experience, this understanding can provide healing and a way forward.

My work is rooted in psychodynamic psychotherapy and evidence-based practices.
I am a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst serving OR and KY. I work primarily with mental health professionals, physicians, attorneys, entrepreneurs, and people in transition in their personal or professional identity. Most people begin therapy with me to improve their mood, sleep, or a more general sense of deep suffering. I can help understand patterns of distressing conflicts in one or more areas of your life such that you feel less isolated by intense emotions and build anew patterns in relating.

My mission is to provide treatment plans tailored to your needs, focused on options and solutions that give you the best chance to succeed. I'm thorough and take the time to understand major life stressors, environments and interpersonal relationships that contribute to your distress. The acuity I encountered working at a psychiatric hospital prepared me for private practice and led to my conservative prescribing approach. I value patient feedback and include it in treatment decisions. My practice focus is medication management but I also offer therapy. My blended therapeutic approach includes elements from many modalities.

Patients are at the center of my psychiatric practice. I believe a collaborative approach towards treatment is generally the most effective route to wellness. Throughout my years of training and practice I have enjoyed working alongside patients to help manage their medications and meet their therapy needs.

Specializing in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of complex cases, psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy of children, adolescents, adults, and psychopharmacology. I am especially interested in the care of persons from other cultural traditions, an outgrowth of many years of clinical and research involvement with refugees from Southeast Asia, and particularly Vietnam. Prior to entering medicine, I served as a Captain in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. It was that experience that stimulated my interest in both medicine and cross-cultural psychiatry.

Psychodynamic Psychiatrists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
