Imagine that when you are doing this I don’t run away or trivialize what is giving you trouble or how you hurt. Instead, I sit with you – sometimes over and over. There is no need to change or be different before I can accept you. Then, when it’s right, I will learn to attend to your troubles carefully and decisively.
Whether this looks like teaching tools, discerning facts and creating a plan, discussing philosophy, cultivating an inner dialogue of compassion, or finding what electrifies you, I will know how to care for you because you’ll feel safe enough to let me. With time this collaborative caring becomes a familiar practice between us.
